Tap tap tap…

Back in the early nineties I remember being in JSS three (Junior Secondary School) when our Business Studies teacher at the time first got us to sit down and learn how to type (without a typewriter in sight I hasten to add) along with learning Shorthand (which we didn’t need a typewriter for!)

She showed us how to position our fingers over an imaginary typewriter and taught us the order in which the letters were positioned. I remember smirking and thinking how ridiculous we all looked poised at our desks doing our best secretary impressions and wondering how this was going to be of use to me in the future. As for the shorthand, it might as well been arabic to me because I did not have a clue in how to put it to use.

Fast forward to almost thirty years later in 2020 after over two decades of travelling all over the world (and having a mighty fine time of it too!). I now find myself reconnecting with terra firma and part of my new personal missions is to be able to ‘touch type’ like those uber trendy people you see in TV ads tapping away effortlessly on their super slim laptops like they're working on a musical masterpiece without looking at their fingers for clarification while sipping from their cup of perfectly brewed coffee. The arabic like shorthand would also come in incredibly handy handy too when I feel the urge to put my thoughts into writing. My friend Miguel who is my Guru for all things IT related introduced me to an online touch-typing course which I’m currently signed up to and am now at the princely speeds of wpm (Don’t judge me) and am steadliy making progress. I’m finding that my big fingers are sabotaging my speedier attempts but I WILL get there! Better late than never eh?
